5 Reasons to Use a Studio for Your Senior Portrait Session

1. Beautiful lighting

Natural sunlight beaming in through floor-to-ceiling windows or black paned garage doors is about as good as you can get! Think you want a golden hour sunset? Think again, and check out these photos! Window light can illuminate you in a stunning manner. Not one artificial light source was used in any of these images! (But the glory of a studio is that you COULD use artificial light sources too! The options for creativity are endless!)

2. No one else is doing it

Do one quick Pinterest search for “senior photos” and you’ll likely see a host of images with a beautiful girl running through a field with her hand in her hair. While the “wild and free” look is admittedly gorgeous, it’s on the verge of being overdone. Meadows of tall grass and mural walls in urban epicenters are fantastic senior portrait locations (I use them!), but literally all of your friends will probably choose one of those options, and in a world of copycat everything, wouldn’t it be nice to do something a little different? Portrait studios are becoming more popular, but many people still don’t have them on their radar when planning their own photography session. Book your session in a studio, and you’re guaranteed to “wow” your friends with the clean modern vibe and gorgeous light!

3. Weather won’t be a problem

Propping your feet up on the window sill while you read your favorite novel to the sound of light thunder and rain tapping against your window is a pleasantry for sure, but that same weather scenario is, obviously, a nightmare for senior photos! Wind, heat, and humidity are also less than desirable when you’ve spent hours perfecting your hair and makeup for your session! And when the unfortunate weather strikes, you’ll be forced to reschedule, which can also be troublesome if your photographer is booked solid on the only dates you’re available, or if you’re on a time crunch to get that yearbook ad finished or grad announcements sent out. Using a studio pretty much eliminates all possibilities of weather being a problem. That is, of course, unless a blizzard makes its way through. But let’s add that to the list of “never gonna happen” scenarios, at least for us Texans. (Ok yes, we DID have that one week in February that no one wants to talk about.)

4. An array of furniture and props

You ever walk into some else’s home that looks like it was put forth into being by the waving of Joanna Gaines’s magic wand? (Or whichever designer makes you green with envy.) Well, walking into a beautiful natural light urban studio is a similar experience, except even better, because you get to move around all the furniture and create a setup that’s perfect for your vibe! Cognac leather sofa? Check! Boho rug? It’s there! Potted plants and accent tables? All for you. Not to mention the beautiful wood floors, massive windows, and warehouse style brick walls. You’ll certainly wish you lived in the space by the time your session is over!

5. Works for any style

One of the best aspects of your senior photo shoot will be getting to wear a mix of your favorite outfits! A studio session is perfect because literally anything you wear will look good in that setting. Whether you glam it up with a beautiful dress, or go barefoot in denim, your outfits will stand out in the minimalist space.

Are you now convinced? Talk to your photographer about this incredible option for your senior session. And if you’re in the Dallas area, I’d love to have a conversation with you! Studios are my absolute favorite setting to shoot in! The above photos were taken at the Lumen Room, which has multiple locations around DFW. It’s probably my fave, but Artist Uprising in Richardson is a close second!
